20 Mule Borax Review, What is Borax anyway?

When I got the opportunity to try out 20 Mule Team Borax, I was a little concerned because I had no idea what it was or how I was going to use it.  I had really only heard the name Borax mentioned with those make it yourself Laundry detergent recipes which I finally decided to try.    Check out my Review, Recipe for Laundry Detergent  and educate yourself on the multiple uses for Borax.

So what is Borax Anyway?

It is the Common Name for Sodium Tetraborate.  It is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by the continuous evaporation of seasonal Lakes.   They remove it from the ground and wash and dry it and put it in a box for people to use.   Nothing is added.

How does 20 Mule Team Borax  Benefit Me and what Can it be used for?

Water Softener and Doing Laundry:

If you have Hard water when you add detergent to your clothing the ingredients in your detergent will just attach to the Calcium and Magnesium granules that settle to the bottom of your washing machine because of the hard water.  Instead of cleaning your laundry your detergent just goes down the drain.   When you use Borax with your detergent (1/2 cup) to each load it softens hard water and allows your detergent to work and it keeps stains from being re-deposited back onto your clothing.

Since I had never made my own laundry soap I decided to try it.  So I went shopping.

Walmart prices were $3.25 for Washing Soda, $1 per soap bar, and $3.25 for Borax.  It takes about 4 bars to completely empty your washing soda box and will make you 384 loads worth of detergent. You still will have some borax left over.

Compare: Purex is about $2 on sale and with a coupon for 24 load bottle. It would take 16 bottles to for 384 loads.    16 bottles at $2 each would be $32.00 compared to the $10.50 to make it.   So I just saved $21.50, not counting the left over borax.

Cleaning the Garbage Disposal,  and Sink:

Just pour it down the drain, let it set 15 minutes and rinse with the garbage disposal on.   It smells much better afterwards.  I tried this one and it really does work.    It also worked really well to get off the yellowing that happens in stainless steel sinks, just pour in and rub with a dish cloth.

Dishwasher Booster:  If you use 1/4 cup thrown in the the bottom of your dishwasher it will reduce spots and film on your dishes.   Great if you run out of Rinse agent.

Bathroom cleaning:   I used it on everything but the mirrors in the bathroom, including in the toilet.  I worked great.  Just add 1/2 cup in a 12 oz bottle of water, spray it on and wipe off.   You can also add 1/2 cup to gallon bucket of hot water and clean that way too.

You can also use borax to Preserve Flowers Permanently and make your own candlewicks.   No I didn't try those.
